It may have something to do with my President’s Club status with Avis.  You see they will always find me a car is their promise and today they lived up to that promise.  Thanks.

The car did not even have a full tank, but I just thanked my lucky stars and filled it up at $3.02/gallon.  It took about 1.5 gallons to top it off.  Of course later while checkin gout my Missouri neighborhood, I passed the same gas station and the cost was $2.99 .  I know that the airport will charge like $3.13/gallon, but the new car rental rules says you have to re-fill within 4 miles of the airport and if you drive less than 75 miles you MUST product a receipt that you purchased gas or be charged $13.99 or something odd like that…

This is Kerwin with Cruisinaltitude.com and its time for Travel Tip Tuesday!

I’m here in Cascade Locks in Oregon and behind me, you can see right there, is what’s called the “Bridge of the Gods.”  This bridge joins Washington state with Oregon state at Cascade Locks.

Today’s Travel Tip is about putting gas in that rented car.

So I’m driving along and then I noticed that the little light came on and said “you need gas.”  Well, I have no idea how far I can drive.  So I started driving slower, got off at the next exit which luckily was about two miles down the road and asked where was the next gas station.  Well, it was four miles down the road, so luckily I was O.K.

And that four miles, actually Cascades Lock where the gas is actually $3.99/gal. good grief!

I got ready, called down to check on a shuttle then headed downstairs to checkout and have a quick breakfast before heading to the airport.  The ride to the airport was short as the airport is across the street.  I had a good talk with the driver who was from Dallas, TX and says he misses his son who lives there.

At the airport, Robert checked me in after waiting about ten minutes behind five people.  He only checked me in for that leg though.  I asked for the other leg, but he said I had to do it at JFK.  I then headed to the TSA and cleared without any incident.

I remembered that the last time I was here, there was a US Airways Club.  I am a Presidents Club member with Continental Airlines and I know that as a new Star Alliance member on Oct. 27, 2009, Presidents Club members can use the US Airways Club come October 27, 2009.  I popped into the Club and the nice lady there said I could use it early.  Cool .

The Club is pretty nice with some muffins, juices, a bar and a Flavia coffee/tea machine and the usual airport Lounge stuff.  Wi-Fi is provided by T-Mobile at a charge.  I stayed there for a while and chilled just before the flight. I headed out at 7:44a just before brewing some lemon tea, but not before taking this picture.

At the gate, everyone was getting ready for the flight.  At 7:48a, a guy came running up to the gate for his flight to Boston at 8:00a.  Only that flight had the jetbridge pulled already.  He was none too happy.  When the agents came up from the jetway, I could see him trying to get onboard.  It was kind of fun to watch.  They did eventually re-book him on my flight at 8:20a via JFK.

I boarded late and took my seat after saying hello to the flight attendant who looked very familiar.  I got settled in on N763JB, an Airbus A320 called “Unforgettably Blue.”

Before we left the gate, Captain Tom told us that our flying time was 1:03 and that we should make it to JFK early.  I was skeptical though as arriving at JFK does not really happens.  He continued to introduce his co-pilot Jason and the cabin crew, Anthony, Nick and Susan.  They were the same ones from my flight from Orlando to Buffalo yesterday.  He concluded by saying that we would cruise at 21,000′.

We pushed back at ontime at 8:20a and was airborne by 8:31a.  It was absolutely beautiful while heading down to JFK.  We passed right over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge which connects Staten Island with Brooklyn, then we passed over Far Rockaway and came in for a landing into JFK at 9:36a.

As we taxied up to the gate, I noticed sixteen airplanes waiting for takeoff; good grief.  Our Captain had said that JFK was experiencing fog, but it should not affect us on landing.  Although I did get a tweet from @wanderingarmean saying that his flight was taking on extra fuel in case of delays coming into JFK from Houston-Hobby.  Unfortunately, he would arrive after I departed, so we would miss each other. I told him I’d wave to him as we passed each other.

We got to our gate at 9:49a, eight minutes late as we had to wait for an airplane to get pushed back.  The final leg of this All you can jet venture is at hand in less than two hours.

After checking Google, I noticed that Metro North has a train that I can just make which will get me to JFK about two hours before the Houston flight.  With that in mind, I called my school chum in the Bronx and told him I was finally coming to visit.  His wife seemed O.K. with it, but it means late night for them on Friday night so I think I will rent a car to alleviate that pressure.  Here is the itinerary I came up after calling jetBlue yet a second time.  This time the lady was more pleasant than the last one.

 I found the gate and found a good spot to charge the computers and also watch the planes go back.  Fantastic; Egypt Air’s B777, Aero Svit’s Boeing 767-400 it loked like, a white Boeing 747-300 as well as Air Berlin’s A330. to name a few  I guess that one is a charter flight.

The airplane finally showed up at 7:45p or so and then boarding started at 8:00p.  Just before boarding the flight attendant came out and waved to me.  I think it was the same guy on the JFK to Richmond flight the day before.  I introduced myself again and chatted.  He said it was good to see me and thanked me for the business asking if I was having a good time.

I went to see if I could get the registration information and luckily the catering truck was pulling up and lighted the area which revealed “Bluesmobile” and N267JB on the Embraer ERJ-190.  I boarded soon after, said hello to the flight attendants and the same guy then offered me two jetBlue wings, a nice touch.  Thanks Marvin.

I took my window seat and settled in next to a guy who was will be in Houston for 24 hours.  No he is not an All You Can Jetter, just making a quick trip.

We pushed back ontime and headed out to the runway.  Soon after takeoff, I was offered a complimentary movie so I watched the Soloist while having the drinsk and snacks.  The movie was not as good as I thought.  My seatmate watched the MTV Music Awards as did others around me on LiveTV.

I was uber tired so I fell asleep awaking when the cabin was being prepared for landing.  We touched down at 10:50p and was at the gate two minutes later, 0:43 early.

The terminal was deserted!  We were not the last ones in as I believe Southwest has a later flight as I hear it every night passing over my house.  The Departure FIDS were blank too and TSA had gone home.

I headed out side and caught the bus to my National Rent a car.  As it turns out I got a car with 3.5 miles on it.  I had booked it on Hotwire for $31.95 as opposed to the egregious cost of the others on their Web sites.  This is really silly, the cars were $18.95 a day as long I as I booked for a pickup before noon on Sunday.  After that is is $102!

This was a fantastic weekend and all went well.  Can’t wait for next weekend.  How was your weekend?

I do prefer Avis and Hertz as they never ask me to look at the car for scratches.  I think it is so silly when car companies like Thrifty asks that.  Of course the car will get dinged with use.  You are a car rental company that is a part of the whole deal, geez…

It is raining in Houston, so even if the car is scratched a little I could not see it as the car is wet.  I only noticed scratches on the bumper.  Hopefully I did not miss any.

Three Metro buses serve the Houston-Hobby airport

The cost for getting to Houston-Hobby from downtown is about $25 with Super Shuttle and $45 or so with a cab.  Metro Houston goes there with the #88, #73 and the #50, but the flight is at 7:35a and the journey from downtown on either of the buses is about an hour.

As I have to arrive at the airport at 6:35a, that means a bus at 5:35a, which means I have to get a bus from my house at about 5:00a, so wake up at 4:00a, so not going to happen.  Checking Google maps also confirmed that there is no bus that early and says the journey time would be 1:54 so nope.
